A Glimpse into “Water Of Life”

“Water of Life” is an evocative tribute to the ocean, a source of life and inspiration for Joanna Jia. The designer’s connection to water runs deep, rooted in her upbringing near the coast of Qingdao, China. For Jia, water symbolizes flow, change, and vitality—qualities that resonate throughout her designs.

The designer shares that the idea for this collection can be traced back to her travels in Hawaii, where she was both enchanted by the ocean’s biodiversity and disheartened by the pollution marring its beauty.

Jia mentions, “This collection is a tribute to that origin, both my own and the Earth’s, and serves as a celebration of the awe-inspiring beauty and the urgent need to protect the oceans that connect us all.”

Each design’s form, color, and texture capture water’s fluidity and resilience while calling attention to the importance of ocean conservation. The collection’s theme is reflected in every piece, showcasing different hues—oceanic blues, tranquil turquoises, and iridescent pearl whites—that represent the ocean’s beauty, mystery, and unpredictability.

Every piece is imbued with the movement of water—the silk and chiffon material flows like gentle tides, while some fabrics shimmer with the colors of coral reefs and sunlight. The intricate details of each design reflect the sea life, from the lacework resembling delicate coral formations to bold silhouettes reminiscent of graceful marine creatures.

Creating with a Purpose

When asked about the creative process behind “Water of Life,” Joanna Jia described it as immersive and reflective. She spent time observing marine wildlife in aquariums, studying their forms and movements to translate their beauty into fabric. Wanting to incorporate sustainability into her collection, Jia also explored a variety of high-tech fabrics and upcycled materials to create this entire collection.

For instance, to create her Butterfly Koi gown, Jia sculpted metal wires into salmon-colored fins and used sequin iridescent tulle and organza to mimic fish scales. She hand-stitched over 80 pearls and beads to evoke the water’s shimmering surface and incorporated plastic tubes and strips to craft unique shapes and silhouettes.

Jia adds, “Through this collection, I aim to express my deep reverence for the ocean and advocate for ocean conservation. Fashion, for me, is not just about aesthetics—it’s about creating with purpose, fashion that not only inspires but also calls for action in preserving the natural world.”

From China to the World

Jia’s journey in fashion began long before “Water of Life.” Since founding Joanna Jia Couture in 1997, she has been committed to creating designs that celebrate cultural heritage while embracing contemporary aesthetics. A graduate of Yun Nan Art University and Sichuan Art Academy, her work often reflects her Chinese roots, blending traditional elements with modern silhouettes to create timeless and innovative pieces.

Initially focusing on Asian cultural wear, Joanna Jia Couture expanded and explored different themes upon moving to the U.S. Since then, the designer has established herself as a figure in the fashion industry, gracing events such as San Francisco Fashion Week and Silicon Valley Fashion Week.

Sustainability has always been at the core of Jia’s brand ethos. As an advocate for ethical fashion practices, she prioritizes using recycled and upcycled materials in her collections.

“I always strive to utilize recycled and upcycled materials in my designs, especially in a world where fast fashion is a huge issue for both the environment and human labor,” Joanna says, reflecting on her vision. “My hope is to inspire others to appreciate the beauty of fashion and consider how their everyday choices can reduce plastic waste, conserve water, and support sustainable practices, especially marine conservation.”
